Dear Charlottesville-Albemarle Squad,
Thank you for taking care of me on January 4, 2009, when I was hit by a vehicle. Your brave crew took care of my panic self. My first trip in the rescue squad was not scary as I was calmed by the caring volunteers.
Luckily, I was okay and my X-rays showed no broken bones or injuries. You have inspired me to apply to the squad!
Thank you so much for taking me to the hospital and all your help!
Dear Rescue Squad,
Thank you again and again for getting me to Martha Jefferson Hospital so quickly and kindly at least three times this year. Because of you, along with my doctor, and my friends who knew when it was time to call you the first time, I'm alive and getting along well.
I hope all of you on the Squad for us always find help available when and where you need it.
With love and gratitude,
The Key West Neighborhood Association appreciates what you do for us.
Ladies and Gentlemen:
Enclosed is our contribution in the amount of $4,000.00. Your staff and volunteers provide an outstanding service for those in our community. On April 24th, my son had to call on you as I was in respiratory distress.
I want to express my appreciation for the professionalism and care with which you treated me. I realize you are volunteers and probably don't get thanked enough for the wonderful service you provide.
Thank you for being there,
Chris Miller, Gilbert Monroe, Aly Gill
Thanks so much for coming to help me when my husband fell at Turtle Creek Road. You are the best!
My family will never forget the care with which you transported my husband when you answered our calls.
Thank you for all you do in our community.
Chris Mehta, Rob Walker, Sam Schlesinger, Kathleen Harrell, Jack Farhi
I wanted to thank the CARS team that responded to the above-mentioned call. My daughter had an episode of low blood sugar and began seizing. I administered glucagon, then called 911. My daughter has psychiatric issues that often make treating her very difficult. Your team arrived and dealt with the situation in a very professional and calm manner. They got her stabilized and then transported us both to the UVa ER.
Please make sure that Chris, Rob, Sam, Kathleen, and Jack know that their efforts made a difference in my life and that of my daughter. And if you can, thank the fireman who also responded. Our community is very fortunate to have such dedicated people.
Andrew Barros, Lydia Powell, Monica Nable, Yen Nyugen
Thanks for the wonderful care from my house to Martha Jefferson Emergency Room on April 15th in the P.M.
Andrew Barros, Chris Mehta, Richard Zhang, Kevin Madigan, Jason Inofuentes, Ashley Simpson, Becky Keith
On April 15, I had to call upon the rescue squad, not once but twice.
My thanks to a very professional team who responded to my calls. Not only were they very efficient with my husband, they were very compassionate with me. Obviously I was quite upset and they helped me to restore a calmness.
Thank you to all who serve this community.
Kevin Boyer & Bobby Rose
Thank you for the ride on Monday 4-13 from Suntrust Mortgage. Mr. Boyer, Mr. Rose and the gentleman on the crew were there when I needed them.
Many thanks for being here for all of us!
Chris Mehta, Liza Sonnenberg & Chris Winstead-Derlego
Please accept my gift in appreciation for your response to my fall at West Park Drive during the early hours of March 24. The help of your crew was most valuable in my getting back to bed that night and your tender care provided me resumption of my night's rest.
Your squad members have transported my mother to UVA hospital several times in the past year. They have always been caring and professional.
Thank you for the excellent work you do!

I write to express my personal thanks and those of all members of the Scottsville Volunteer Rescue Squad to the crew of unit 142 for their exceptional care on a recent call. On Sunday, March 22, CARS was dispatched to the Jefferson-Madison Library branch on Gordon Avenue in Charlottesville for an abdominal pain call. In fact, the patient, a life-time member of Scottsville rescue, had suffered an aortic dissection and was rapidly bleeding out. The crew on 142, Jake Christopher and Laura Johnson, immediately recognized the potentially catastrophic nature of the patient's condition and transported her to the University of Virginia Medical Center's Emergency Department. Thanks to their rapid action and the subsequent skills of surgeons and nurses at the University, our dear friend and colleague is alive and is making a recovery.
As you know, we at SVRS have the greatest respect and admiration for Charlottesville-Albemarle Rescue Squad, and in this case especially our profound gratitude accompanies those sentiments. To Jake and Laura, thank you for giving us our member, for had you not handled the situation so profesionally and expeditiously, she would not be with us today.
My best wishes and thanks to the wonderful group of selfless individuals who are the members of CARS.

Thank you so much for your response to our house a few weeks ago for my husband. He was admitted to the hospital and was there the rest of that week. The Trileptal he was on for the Trigeminal Neuralgia depleted the sodium in his body, causing the seizure.
He ended up with a specialist in Richmond who performed a gamma knife procedure. He no longer has severe pain and is off the Trileptal. Our hope is that he becomes pain free and no more medicine of any kind!
We appreciate your prompt response and the care you administered! Thank you very much!

Thank you so much for the great tour of the Rescue Squad. I had fun seeing all the equipment and also riding on the heavy rescue truck. I can't wait until I'm old enough to go on calls with you.

Thank you for your prompt response and excellent care when I needed help.
Thanks so much for your prompt response to our calls.

Charlottesville-Albemarle Rescue Squad,
Enclosed is our check for $100 to say thank you to Risto Kervuori, Steve Elliott and Matt Harback. They took my 91 year old husband to the Emergency Unit of UVA Medical Center on February 10.
He made a good recovery after ten hours of tests! Again, thank you.
Dear First Responders,
Please accept these cookies as a token of my appreciation for what you do for the community. Your service is invaluable.
Your Miss Albemarle 2008,
Hannah K. Uhlig
Thank you for everything you have done for us and this community. This is a small token for what all of you have done.
You wrote me a gracious letter of thanks for my donation to CARS in 2008. It is I, however, who should be thanking you and your colleagues, who give so much of their time and effort to the community in performing the essential services of the Rescue Squad! (I remember having had an undergraduate student at UVA who worked a night shift at CARS before coming to an early morning class.) CARS is one of several institutions that make us proud to be citizens of this community. My wife and I are immensely grateful to all of you.
Scott Currence, Jake Christopher, Eleanor Kirk, Brian Meffle & Meghan Mavredes
I wanted to send a belated thank you to you for your efforts when responding to my 911 call on 27 December 2008. My husband's condition turned out to be irreversible, but you gave him every chance. Your compassion and professionalism were greatly appreciated, and made a stressful, sad experience bearable.
Please accept the enclosed donation as a small token of my gratitude. God bless all of you.
We are so blessed to have the wonderful Rescue Squad that we have.
God Bless you all,
Monica Nable, Alex Solomon & Sam Schlesinger
To the Rescue Squad,
I donate the enclosed check for $75 in gratitude for the swift and professional service that the squad rendered to my family late last Wednesday the 21st, when my wide fell seriously in the kitchen and could not use her legs. I therefore phoned the Squad, which at once dispatched to us three of your best rescuers, who were able to carry my wife to a bedroom on the first floor - our normal bedroom being on the top floor and unreachable.
We are thankful,
Thank you for the great service. Please stay all volunteer!
To the Charlottesville-Albemarle Rescue Squad,
Please accept this donation on behalf of R.B., my father, given this holiday season with love. He appreciates your service and so do I. Thank you for your commitment to your community and assistance to my family in times of need.
I needed transport service this year and you do a wonderful service.
CARS was there for my family during both my father's and grandfather's long and painful illnesses. Though they have both passed on I hope this contribution can help others.
Monica Nable, Ben Minehardt, Nicole Ware

P.S. When we see one of your vehicles go by, we pray for you and the person in distress.
Thank you for all you do.
Thank each of you for your dedication to aiding people.
Many thanks for all of your help this past year.

You do such a wonderful job... thank you!
Thank you for your good hard work on behalf of the Charlottesville community. A contribution is enclosed.
Kevin Madigan, Jessica Allen, Katie Serlemtosis & Danielle Moses
This is a special Thank You to Kevin, and three young ladies who responded to my call to 911, to help me lift my husband, who had fallen in our kitchen, while going to the sink for a drink of water. This is a "ritual" he has had for years. The hour was 12:20 am on December 1, 2008.
After learning all the pertinent information from my husband, Kevin highly suggested the squad transport him to the hospital. I chose Martha Jefferson, and they did the rest. This excellent suggestion may have saved B's life, as he had a extreme E-Coli infection and was hospitalized for five days.
Now home, he is recuperating slowly and will be enrolling in physical therapy next week, to regain strength (he will be 85 12/30).
Thanks so very much!
Laura Bonner, Mark Smith & Jessica Allen
Thanks for the help December 7, 2008.
Please accept the enclosed donation for all of the outstanding service to our community.
This check is in honor of my mother, R.H., who was taken to the ER at UVA Hospital from Martha Jefferson House in 2007. The service was excellent, and we appreciate it.
Chville-Albemarle Rescue Squad:
My mom has had congestive heart failure for quite awhile and when we have had to call on your services, your staff has always been prompt, efficient, courteous and knowledgeable. We are grateful for the services you supply our area. You never know what you have in your own backyard until it's needed. You, our friends, have always been a step above our needs and we thank you greatly.
Again, we thank you for your services, kindness and generosity over the past couple of years. You guys (ladies also) are GREAT!
Love to all and keep us in your prayers as we approach the holiday season.

My mother and I want to thank you for transporting her to the Martha Jefferson Emergency Room on Labor Day Monday.
The clinic nurse at Westminster Canterbury felt it best to have her go to the Emergency Room by the Rescue Squad where I could meet her there, as I was out of town that day. I met my mother at Martha Jefferson and did not get the opportunity to thank the personnel who ran the call.
My mother is appreciative of the fact that you are a volunteer organization. She asked me to send a check from her to thank your organization and those individuals.
Again, my mother and I both want to acknowledge and thank CARS for the very positive experience she had and, or course, for her professional treatment.
P.W.W. and F.W.
I'm enclosing my annual donation of $25.00. Back about 4 or 5 years ago, I required your help on behalf of my late husband. Your prompt appearance was phenomenal.
I salute the squad for the dedication to this community.
Thank you for all you do. I wish I had more to give.
Thank you for transporting my mother to MJH twice on Saturday September 20th.
Noah Madden, Tom Souter, Ally Gill
Enclosed is a donation to the Charlottesville-Albemarle Rescue Squad. I would like to express my sincere thank you to the Rescue Squad for the very prompt and helpful care that was given to me on August 7. Shortly after noon on that day I suffered a heart attack at my home and we found it necessary to call the Rescue Squad. Their very prompt arrival at my home and the assistance and care that were given to me by Squad members at my home and as the Squad ambulance transported me to Martha Jefferson Hospital were superb. The Squad members who attended to me were very competent, kind, considerate, comforting and helpful in all that they did. I feel extremely grateful to have been in their good care in this emergency situation. CARS is certainly very fortunate in having such outstanding personnel to carry out its mission.
Please extend my sincere thanks to those Squad members as well as to all your organization for the outstanding service that is provided to our community. I will always recall with gratitude the excellent care that was given to me by CARS.

Last Fall, John Burruss came to State Farm to speak to our employees during National Teen Driver Safety Week. His expertise and style of delivery were a big hit with our employees. They have requested that he return during National Teen Driver Safety Week this October and he has been gracious enough to accept.
We wanted to express our appreciation for the service that your volunteers so selflessly provide and your willingness to share your knowledge and expertise to help educate the community.

To the Rescue Squad -
I had a ride in one of your "chariots" a couple of weeks ago, and I am very appreciative of your kind attention and excellent care.
To the Rescue Squad -
I would like to thank you for you wonderful care of my husband on August 22nd.
The care you gave him made it much easier for me.
Bill Brady, MD
I wanted to write and thank you all and specifically Dr. William Brady for his assistance in caring for one of our patients, J.W. J's family called 911 on Friday, 8/23 hoping they could arrange admission to the hospital because she had uncontrolled pain, an underlying significant psychiatric disorder, and metastatic breast cancer. Despite repeated attempts to get her attending physicians to sign papers for her ECO, we could not accomplish this, which was clearly in her best interest. Dr. Brady agreed to sign for the ECO which allowed the patient to be admitted where her pain medications were adjusted and she was eventually discharged with pain controlled, her emotional status stabilized, and her family in much more peace.
I would like to thank Dr. Brady for his timely response, excellent judgement, and willingness to help a patient in acute need. Not only was she served, but her family was well served and deeply appreciative as well.
CARS is a tremendous asset to our community. Thank you for all you do.

Thank you for transporting my mother to Martha Jefferson ER August 28th.

On the night of August 5/6, I became comatose because of low blood sugar. This was a first in our family. My wife called the duty nurse at WCBR who in turn called the rescue squad. The rescue squad arrived and through intervenous glucose, revived me.
The Rescue squad leader and his squad were very professional, courteous and competent. I was revived in short order, offered a trip to the hospital which I declined - after which the Rescue Squad departed. I do not know the name of the leader of the rescue squad, but I understand the squad was 140. I wish to thank him and his squad for their efficient help. It is wonderful to know we have such people in our community. They are a blessing..
With many thanks,
Mike Berg, Sam Yun, Anastasia Crihfield, Charlie Smith
Dear Charlottesville-Albemarle Rescue Squad Members,
I wanted to thank you for the gentle, professional and compassionate care you gave my mother, M.L., in June when you transported her to the MJH ED. The squad members were so kind to come to the ED to check on her later in the evening.
We are so grateful for your service and dedication.
P.S., My mom is doing fine and is on new meds.
Thanks so much for your care and kindness.

Thank you for your services of transportation to Martha Jefferson Hospital on July 31, 2008.
John Burruss, 2007 SEMT Class
On behalf of the University of Virginia, we thank you for your efforts in coordinating the services of CARS and providing leadership for the recent rescue drills performed at U.Va. for the benefit of our staff. We want to recognize you, the instructor assistants, and the EMT class members from last summer who contributed valuable time and skills in these events. We also commend the administration of your department who allowed the valuable resources of volunteers and technical rescue equipment to be used to demonstrate CARS technical rescue skills and to educate our staff on working with the emergency responders in our community.
The Facilities Management and Environmental Health and Safety departments are very grateful for the time and effort that were expended. These exercises helped draw attention to the importance of following safety precautions during some of the more difficult and hazardous work activities that take place at U.Va. We hope that we will never have the need to call upon your services, but if so, we are confident in the technical rescue skills and professionalism that CARS would offer in such an emergency. Thank you for all that you and CARS do for our community.

On Friday, 25th July, my sister fell and I was unable to get her up.
I called 911 and you all responded at once. The three young people that came were most professional, sympathetic and very cheerful. Thankfully, my sister was not injured when she fell and we are most appreciative of your quick response and aid.
Enclosed is a donation to aid you in your good work.
Very truly yours,
Will Barnhardt & Jason Hogan
The enclosed check is sent in appreciation for my "ride" to MJH on the morning of June 30, 2008.
You've helped me several times and I want you to know I really appreciate it.

Dear Sir or Madam:
On Sunday, June 23, 2008, at about 2:00 a.m. I asked my wife to call 911. I had gone to the bathroom and was trying to return to bed. When I experienced much agonizing pain in my back that I was unable to move. I was half-sitting, half-leaning against the counter. I was in that position for 15 to 20 minutes when I decided to call your help.
I was really grateful to see your team. Two young women and a slightly older man at my side a few minutes later. The man, and the woman who appeared to be the team leader, urged me to let them take me to the Emergency Room. I had had an epidural shot in my back on Thursday, June 19th, and had experienced little or no pain until the Sunday morning of the incident. I felt that I could only get back into bed, the shot would take effect and I could get through it with some rest. They said the decision was mine and that they could fully and compassionately get me down the hall and into bed. They were wonderfully efficient through it all.
I can't find words fully to express my gratitude and admiration for these fine people. I never learned their names, but I am forever grateful to them. I'm still not 100% recovered, but the doctor tells me the epidural is working.
The spirit that motivates your people to much dedication cannot be equated with any amount of money, and I'm sure you can use the enclosed check to buy gasoline for your vehicles!! (or maybe a vehicle).
Michael Berg & Brian MacMillan
Dear Michael -
I just wanted to thank you and the squad members for all that you did to try and save my husband's life the night of April 19. Everything is a blur to me from that night, but I do remember your kindness as well as the other squad members.
Also, thank you for talking to me on the phone as I tried to make some sense of what had happened to my husband.

Dear CARS responders of April 21, 2008,
I write to say thanks and give a commendation for the care, compassion and professionalism of your responders to an MVA on Monday, April 21, 2008, shortly after 11:36 a.m. at intersection of the EB US 250 off- ramp and Barracks Road. C'ville Officer Craig Sorokti was on the scene and summoned CARS. Both cars ended up being 'totaled.'
I was the injured Maryland driver of the 2003 VW Golf. It was drizzling. I was kinda damp and chilly. Kinda woozy. Once I was fairly sure the other driver did not have injuries, and your crew appeared so swiftly, I remember suddenly being ludicrously over- anxious about my expensive classical guitar, laptop, GPS, phone, wallet; I didn't want them to be left in the car when it was towed to impound. With care, humor and gentle handling, the CARS crew strapped me to a backboard, stowed me in the CARS van, brought the other driver in too, and even assured that my valued items came along too, before transporting us to UVa Hospital ER. Their steady, soothing talk and ministrations kept my anxiety level from getting too elevated. I was so relieved. (I'd never been in a serious accident before, so this was all a new and mysterious process to me.)
Though I regret their names escape me if I ever even registered them that fuzzy-headed morning, your crew were marvelous and so compassionate. I was in shock and not very coherent, but I remember enough to know your crew did good by me and the other driver that day. One CARS woman at the scene even stopped by the ER to check on my later. I mean, really above and beyond.
I drive to C'ville regularly to visit my aging Dad at Morningside Assisted Living. I'll feel that much more secure on my future trips, knowing CARS and your fine folks are there.
Thanks for all you do.
Thank you for being there for us when we needed you.
M. & N.S.

Please accept the enclosed as a donation towards your current capital campaign.
Keep up the great work!
Thank you so much for allowing me to shadow you last Saturday in your capacity as Duty 1. I learned a great deal, and I especially appreciated your sharing your wisdom and your caudoz as we talked.
We're working hard to make Scottsville Rescue a strong organization and your willingness to help us gain insight as to "how it's done" was very helpful.
Again, many thanks to you and to all at CARS!
When my brother (H.J.) was a resident at Winterhaven your services were needed several times. He passed away in January.
He had a little money left and I know he would want me to send you a donation. Your service is excellent. I wish to go on record as being against the prosed second operation. I see nothing but problems in the future.
Thanks so much for "being there".

I can't thank you and Sarah enough for coming out and surprising Matthew on his birthday!! He was thrilled beyond belief and thoroughly enjoyed talking to you. Needless to say, the ride to school was the icing on the cake! I can't imagine a more fabulous birthday for a 10-year-old boy than what you provided. He will never forget it. Thank you again for your kindness and thoughtfulness.
Please tell Sarah how much Keith and I enjoyed talking to her on our ride to school also. It was all great fun.
I am enclosing a donation to further express my appreciation for your generosity.

I can't thank you enough for the prompt response to the 911 call to my father's house. I am happy to report he is back home and doing well. Thank you so much for the quality care you provided on Tuesday, March 4.
All my best,
Thank you for being so kind.
Once again it's time to say a sincere thank you to the Squad for a ride to Martha Jefferson - this time February 23.
I hope this check will help a little for the expenses of that trip.
Ladies and Gentlemen:
Thank you for all you do for the community. And thank you for being there whenever my family has had need of your emergency services.
Noah Madden, Mike Berg & Anastasia Crihfield
I want to tell everyone how grateful I am for the care you gave to my father on Friday night, Feb.15, through Saturday evening, Feb. 16, when he was having trouble breathing.
First, CARS was there immediately. Not only did you make my 81-year-old dad comfortable and treat him respectfully and kindly, but when the paramedic on your team, Mr. Berg, saw me later in the ER, he asked about my dad by name. Which meant the world to me. I've been a supporter of CARS for several years now and as you can imagine, that will only continue.
I am amazed and so very, very grateful. Thank you, everyone, for caring for one elderly man who was visiting from out of town, and thereby giving his daughter (and his wife) such a blessing.
D. J. M.
Lauren Menzies, Carrie Weber, Jason Inofuentes, Brian Meffle, Bobby Rose
We want to thank you all so much for the rescue of my husband on November 29, 2007. My husband had broken his ankle on November 17 and two weeks later a clot had formed in his lungs and he couldn't breathe. It was too close!
By the grace of God, emergency crews of the rescue squad and the UVA Hospital, I still have him! The doctor at the UVA Emergency Room said he was turning blue and they were all wondering if they were going to get the clot solved in time.
May God bless each of you who had even a small part in working this miracle.
E. & L.W.
I was staying with my daughter following surgery. A couple of days later I was rushed to the hospital by your rescue squad. Accept this contribution as thanks for your service.
Happy Valentines Day! Thanks you so very much for all you do for our community. Enjoy the cookies!

I am sending a small check with much care and many thanks to all of you good caring people. It is a comfort, after having two heart attacks, to know that CARS is out there to help. I am most thankful to all of you.
I will send money when I can. No where else can one get the kindness with authority of knowing how to take care of what's going on.
With respect and Pray God to keep us all safe.
As a token of our appreciation, we wish to honor the life of J.L. by presenting the enclosed certified check of $100.00 to your Rescue Squad. Use the monies to purchase supplies, equipment or other needs.
We also thank and honor you for your professional service to members of your community and wish you safe continous service to those in need.

Dear Tommy, Patrick and Laura,
Here's a little token of our deep appreciation for the quick response and excellent care on the evening of December 4th. S. was 9 months pregnant and her uterus had ruptured. Your timely drive to the hospital and the care given during the ride were crucial to the success of the emergency c-section birth of W.Y. at 7:03 am. We are so grateful to your part in bringing our little Christmas miracle into the world!
S., S., K., E., H., and W.Y.
The enclosed check is sent in sincere appreciation for the ride to MJH on January 7. Your young crew did a remarkable job - as usual. So good to see young folks so interested in community affairs.
So long for now, but there will be another time!
Dear Rescue Squad Angels,
Many thanks for getting my husband up. So far, there is no evidence of damage except to his ego. You are truly angels with halos.
Thank you for taking my mom to the hospital. I like you guys!
Elizabeth (age 4)
Many thanks to all for all the wonderful job you do in Charlottesville. Happy New Year in 2008!
Thank you for your wonderful volunteer service and committment to our community. We hope that this donation of $1,000.00 will help enable you to continue reaching out to those who need your help in the year ahead.
G. & K.O.
Please accept this small check in honor of all of you members of CARS. Keep up the good work and to hell with the idiots at City Hall.
Thank you for your instant response to my heart attack - your service was excellent.
Keep fighting City Hall.
Thanking you for your help on November 11 when you took me to the Martha Jefferson Hospital Emergency Room. I appreciate so much all you did or me.
Dayton Haugh, Stephanie Morton & Matt Harback
Dear Dayton Haugh,
You and your team came to our aid on January 1, 2008, when I suffered unconsciousness due to hypoglycemia. We are extremely grateful for all the skill and efficiency provided in a potentially life threatening situation. I am doing quite well now, thanks to you and all the other men and women in attendance that day.
M. & E.R.
Thank you. I appreciate what you do for the community. Lots of us do what we can; I've been donating blood on a regular basis for years. I'm sorry Charlottesville thinks they need a separate emergency response team. Maybe it will take some of the load off of your shoulders. Also, I'm sorry that you didn't meet your fund raising goal this year. Please consider my check as an addition to my 2007 donation.
D. & A. N.
On behalf of the Men's Auxiliary to the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1827, please accept this donation. We appreciate all the great work you do. We are proud to have people like you serving our community.
One of your best is a member of our Post, and we (and you) are lucky to call him friend. Mr. Larry Mraz.

Dear Rescue Volunteers,
I moved here September 2006 and on 10-18-07 your squad was called and I was taken to the ER at Martha Jefferson Hospital.
I found out there was no need for dread because your team was so caring, thoughtful and helpful, which relaxed me.
Really, there are no words to fully express my gratitude so I am enclosing a check.
By the way, I am most annoyed with the City Council's steps to change the rescue operation when you people have been for decades doing such a great job for its citizens.
May you all have a happy, healthy and rewarding New Year!
Praying that you will make the goal. Thank you for your volunteer work and services.

To Whom It May Concern,
I write to thank three members of your organization - Will Barnhardt, Kathy Craig and Sarah Lawson - for the service they provided in transporting me from my doctor's office to the emergency room at Martha Jefferson Hospital on December 13th. They were very competent and personable and I appreciate what they did for me.
I thanked them that day, but please thank them again for me.

This check is sent with all my thanks.
On the evening of September 13th, my husband called 911 because I was having chest pains. We live in Glenmore and you came promptly. The squad that came and took me to UVA Hospital gave me excellent care and I am very grateful! God bless all of you!
Dear Helpful Angels,
Many thanks for getting my husband back in his wheelchair last Sunday. Enclosed is a check that I hope will help.
Laura Johnson, Michael Hawkinson & Anthony Judkins
Thank you so much for caring for my stepfather, S.C., on December 26, 2006. He had become ill on Christmas Day and was unable to walk by the next day. We assumed that he was dehydrated from a viral illness, but we were unable to get him to the car to take him to the Emergency Room. CARS helped us to get him to UVA's ER where he was hydrated. After his 3rd liter of IV fluids, his labs returned and showed he had elevated cardiac enzymes and was in complete renal failure with a metabolic acidosis (pH 6.95). Since he had to history of renal disease of cardiac failure we were puzzled. He was aggressively treated all night in the ICU and was starting to stabilize. The next morning he went for a CT scan of his abdomen, looking for a potential abscess. While transferring to the CT table he arrested with pulseless electrical activity. His final diagnosis was death from massive septicemia, although we never obtained positive blood or urine cultures. Several months later, his autopsy revealed that he had died from a ruptured thoracic and abdominal aortic aneurysm that must have been progressing for several days - cutting off blood supply to his kidney and portions of his heart.
I wanted to write and thank you for all of your help and kind care you took when helping S. He was a World War II bomber pilot that was given all of the dignity and care that anyone could have asked for.
Thank you for your services!!
M.B. and the C. Family
We give thanks to you again for saving I's life on 2-11-05.
Dear members of the Charlottesville-Albemarle Rescue Squad,
Please accept my husband, D., and my most heartfelt "thank you" for being "there" whenever any of us need your help.
You have helped me personally twice in the almost six years we have lived in the Charlottesville-Albemarle area. And I don't know what I would have done without you, without your wonderful calmness and your tremendous knowledge, without your willingness to serve all of us so selflessly. We hope our contribution shows our gratitude in some small way. We hope to send more in the future.
Thank you again for your service to all of us in the Charlottesville-Albemarle area.

Charlottesville-Albemarle Rescue Squad,
To the lady and gentlemen who helped me at Cabell Hall on Sunday, November 11. Thank you for all your tender loving care. Cabell Hall is such a difficult place to maneuver a stretcher - you did so very well.
Charles Smith checked on me in the emergency room when in on another call. I appreciate the attention this group of people gave to me.
I am enclosing a check to help you continue the fine service you give to the residents of Charlottesville.

On October 23, 2007 we called for the rescue squad for help at about 8:15 pm. Our poodle get her leg caught in the wire in a metal cage. It started to swell and we could not get it out. She was screaming in pain. My husband tried to cut the wire but we were totally helpless as we are 76 & 77 and have no strength. I asked my husband to hold the dog to help keep pressure off of her leg while got the cell to call for help. He reached right down in front of her mouth and accidentally bumped her while she was screaming in pain and she bit him on the finger. It started to bleed fast and got him upset. He is diabetic and a heart patient.
I had no muzzle to put on her as we never had a dog that bit. The rescue man that came in from the rescue squad truck said he would try to cut the wire to free her. After a short while he was able to cut the wire and free her. They then took my husband to the hospital to be treated.
I know we never would have gotten this dog out ourselves as we were not strong enough to cut the wire. We both were beyond helping her. We were emotionally upset beyond control at this time. She would still be there today if it was not for your help.
I want to say than you with all my heart for your kind help. The rescue man was very brave to do this since we did not have the dog muzzled. My heart says thank you. I just want you all to know how grateful we are for your kind help. I know Sabrina was also because when her foot came out she just laid there and looked at the man with kindness.
I know it is not much as we live on social security, but enclosed is a check to return some kindness to you.

This is written in behalf of my family and me to express our thanks and deep appreciation for the attention and assistance you gave to my wife this past Saturday evening, following the U-Conn - UVA football game.
I'm afraid the situation would have become more serious if we had not received your attention and the ride back to our car, parked at "The Jack".
I'm happy to report that our return trip to Connecticut was without incident and my wife survived the episode well.
We were impressed with the availability and the efficiency of the service provided by your volunteer Rescue Squad. Enclosed is a voluntary contribution to demonstrate our appreciation.

My husband and I were traveling in Virginia last week and stopped at Charlottesville to tour Monticello on Tuesday, October 30th. We checked in at the Holiday Inn on 5th Street and my husband missed a step and fell in the parking lot. The staff kindly called you and the men that came were extremely professional, very caring and kind. My husband did not want to go to the hospital as he thought he was not seriously hurt, but, shortly after we went to our room, I called the desk to ask for another squad to take him to the hospital. This time both the fire engine and rescue squad came and, once again, treated my husband with kindness and professionalism. They did take him to the ER and I followed in my car.
It was scary to be in a city that your are not familiar with and have to deal with an accident, but, everyone we came into contact with were very nice people. I just wanted to write to thank you again for your concern and kindness - even though I know it is your job, but it really helped to have understanding people coming to your aid.
Thanks for always being there for us. My husband passed away in January 2006 and you were there for him each time we had to call.
Thanks to each of you for the great service you provide for our community. It is greatly appreciated and God Bless each of you!
Andrew Barros, Jason Inofuentes and Jay Lavine
To Whom it Concerns,
On October 3rd I passed out at the Rio Hills Shopping Center. The Rescue Squad was called and I was taken to the Martha Jefferson E.R. and was hospitalized for three days.
The two young men who took such good care of me were Andrew and Jason. They were most efficient and very professional. Not a minute was wasted in starting an IV and an EKG and at the same time being most cheerful and encouraging. They are to be commended and we are fortunate to have such caring volunteers in our city.
We have lived here over 50 years and only recently called on you for help.
My husband has high blood pressure, diabetes, back surgery, difficulty working, etc. We thought he was stroking! You were so kind to us - you sent a group of 7 or 8 people! They were all so dedicated and kind. What a country we live in, to have such people. We are truly blessed!
Please accept this small token and our apologies for the false alarm!
You have no idea what it means to us elderly to know you are there for us! Our very best to you!

Dear Charlottesville-Albemarle Rescue Squad:
I want to express my appreciation for the incredible service you offer our community.
On May 18th, I was transported to the Martha Jefferson Hospital Emergency Room by CARS. If my memory is correct, the volunteers were named Susan and Anthony. Although both of them provided outstanding service, I had the most opportunity to observe Anthony as he took care of me in the back of the ambulance.
I was profoundly impressed with Anthony's professionalism, attention to detail, concern and demeanor.
Please communicate my sincere appreciation to your staff (and especially Susan and Anthony) for the contribution they make to the quality of life in the Charlottesville/Albemarle area.
Shumar Kumar, Erin McElwain and Tucker Mudrick
I wanted to thank you for helping me two Tuesdays ago when you picked me up from my neighbor's house. You were all very nice and kind.
Back in April 2006, my sister, brother-in-law and I were in a bad car accident at the intersection of Rt 250 right outside your station. We were very grateful for the help we received from the rescue squad, and thankfully we were all ok except for some bumps and bruises. I was pregnant at the time, so it was especially scary for me. I'm happy to report that S.C.W. was born healthy and happy August 16th!!!
Thanks to you all, especially to Farrell Long!! Thank you Farrell for your witness and prayers - God bless you!!
Thanks so much for your wonderful and professional work!
Amanda Hunt, Maria Moreno, Jason Le and Jennifer Liebsch

Smiles and Thanks!!

I appreciated so very much the help your people gave yesterday morning around five o'clock when they lifted my husband from the floor and restored him to bed.
Thank you for being there when I needed you!
Dear Charlottesville-Albemarle Rescue Squad
Please accept this check in loving memory of A. L. B; who died peacefully after a long battle with Parkinson's Disease. Your compassion and knowledge in every crisis has helped so many in our community, including myself. May God bless you!

To: Dayton Haugh, CARS Chief
I wish to commend the CARS crew and the Charlottesville Fire Dept for the excellent care provided for a child today prior to admission to the UVA ED. The providers on scene responded with appropriate CPR and placed an IO line that was invaluable to our resuscitation. I want to thank the entire team who include:
Theresa Schlager, MD
Professor Emergency Medicine and Pediatrics
Thank you for all that you did for my Aunt B. and cousin H. when they needed your help.
Charlottesville-Albemarle Rescue Squad,
Thank you CARS for your care and kindness. God bless you all.
My husband and I are sending this to you in memory of Mrs. L.F.R. who passed away in June. We understand your ambulance service did a great deal for her and we thank you. May God bless you for your many kindnesses.

To all the Volunteers,
We would like to thank those that responded to my parent's home on the morning of January 15th, and again that afternoon. Although my father passed away that morning at home, the compassion, professionalism and care given was second to none. Later that same day you were called back for my mother and transported her to Martha Jefferson where she also passed away on Sunday morning. Again, that same compassion & professionalism was shown. We all are eternally grateful to each of you. As the service you provide to the community is outstanding. May God watch over you in your everyday walk of life.

Thank all of you for responding to my 911 call for my husband J.T. You worked so hard to save him. My family appreciates how nice and friendly everyone was to us on such a trying time.

We do wish to thank the two fine young men who came to our rescue last evening by picking up Mr. M. "from the floor". The Rescue Squad is a wonderful organization and we do appreciate you. Thank you!!
Mr. & Mrs. L.M.
Charlottesville-Albemarle Rescue Squad,
On June 23 I was in a bad automobile accident and members of your squad responded quickly and brought me to the UVA Emergency Room. You'll find a contribution enclosed for the help you gave me.
I was especially comforted by the kindness and calmness of a woman by the name of Amber and I would ask you to make sure she knows how grateful I am.
Dear Rescue Squad,
I am sending you a check for $10.00 to help a little in your need. I truly wish I could send more money, but I simply cannot. I live on Social Security money and I am fortunate that my doctor lets me work two mornings a week to pay for the pills I must take, pills he cannot give me as samples. I am 80 years old and I had a stroke on July 2003, so I take medicine I need.
Even though I don't have much money, I want you to know I appreciate all that you do. You came to help me when I had my stroke. Thank all of you so very much, you are in my prayers.
Thank you so much for helping me last Monday. It was not a heart attack, as I was afraid of, but a kidney infection/pleurisy combination. The pain was so intense that the Doctor didn't want my husband to take me in just in case it was my heart.
The team was very considerate of my 11 year old granddaughter who has Down's Syndrome and did not understand what was going on.
God Bless you all!
Jake Benner and Erin Kalan
I want to thank you so much for the help you gave me on Thursday. You transported me from my Doctor's office to Martha Jefferson Hospital.
I especially want to thanks Jake & Erin, you were very kind and I appreciate it.
I'm enclosing an donation in appreciation of your assistance.
Thanks for being so nice to me.
Charlottesville-Albemarle Rescue Squad,
Thanks so much for your kindness in time of need.
As a heart patient at UVA, I'm so re-assured that you are there for me if I should need you. Keep up the good work!
I wish my donation could be more.
We are thankful to CARS and all the wonderful care and kindness thay give to us all.

Dear Chief Haugh,
I wanted to let you know that I was assisted by one of your ambulances on Saturday evening after I fell in a locker room at the Charlottesville Ice Park. I wouldn't have worried much but I am four months pregnant with my first child. Your EMT's that helped me were Brian and Byron (if I remember their names correctly). They got to the scene, checked me out, asked me to walk to the ambulance and got me settled in for the ride to UVA Medical Center. They kept me and most of all, my husband, very calm on the ride. I wanted to extend my greatest thanks and appreciation to you and your paramedics for a great job!
Thanks once again for your outstanding support of the Charlottesville Ten Miler. We are very appreciative!
A. & D. W.,
Thanks for your care and kindness.
Dear CARS Members,
Two years ago our family was in great need of your services. My husband suffered a heart attack in the early morning hours of March 17, 2004. That was a frightening and lonely time. It can be difficult to respond to an emergency, remember all we are taught to do and remain calm, when your patient is a loved one. It is at those times we are so grateful for someone to respond, come to our rescue and provide the needed emergent care.
It was such a blessing to dial 911 and have expert help arrive so quickly. Being in a state of shock, I was grateful for your team's efficiency in such a situation. Their quickness and competent manner in assessing and preparing my husband was appreciated as well as their dignified and caring way of treating him.
While this event was over two years ago, it is still very present in my mind and heart. It has been difficult to put into words how much your presence meant to me that morning. Thank you for your services and dedication to those in need.
God's blessings to each of you.
S.P and B. A.
Thank you for the service you give the community. Blessings to all of you!

Dear Rescue Squad,
You were there when I needed you. Thank you!
Bless you all!
Please accept this correspondence as our sincere gratitude for allowing John Burruss the opportunity to present his course Fire Scene Awareness: EMS Role to the Stafford Volunteer Rescue Squad at our monthly training meeting on Tuesday, April 17, 2007. Mr. Burruss's expertise and knowledge in the Fire and EMS field is proven through his motivation and professional demeanor when presenting this topic. In an era when volunteerism has been most vulnerable to recruiting and retaining individuals for Fire and EMS departments nationwide, Mr. Burruss's presentation offers encouragement to those dedicated in advancing their training standards to provide the best possible care and treatment when called upon during an emergency. Your agency should be extremely proud to have Mr. Burruss as an asset to your organization, his willingness to provide quality training to other EMS departments demonstrates an impeccable sense of pride that positively reflects upon the history and future on the Charlottesville-Albemarle Rescue Squad.
Again thank you for making training resources available to us by allowing us to attend your training classes or going above and beyond by bringing these courses directly to us. Please do not hesitate in contacting the Stafford Volunteer Rescue Squad if our assistance is ever needed. We look forward to working with you again in the near future.

Rotation Crew - Sean Cheon, Mike Bannister and Charlie Smith
My mother, M.F.W., and I want to thank you for transporting her to the Martha Jeffererson Hospital Emergency Room this past Saturday.
She woke up that morning complaining of a headache, dizziness and nausea. When the clinic nurse at WC came to her apartment, she called the doctor who felt it best to have her go to the Emergency Room by the Rescue Squad. I met them at Martha Jefferson and did not get the opportunity to thank the personnel who ran the call. Unfortunately, we did not get their names.
My husband, PW, has been involved with CARS for the past 26 years and my mother is appreciative of the fact that you are a volunteer organization. She asked me to send a check from her to thank your organization and those individuals.
Fortunately, she has Labyrinthitis, an inner ear infection. While this may take a few weeks to heal, she and I both want to acknowledge and thank CARS for the very positive experience she had and, of course, for her professional treatment.
Ladies and Gentlemen,
Please accept the enclosed check with my appreciation for your quick response when I fell in my kitchen March 6th. It has taken a long time to feel normal again, but the men were correct. I had no broken bones - just bruising which continues to fade.
Very Truley Yours,
Enclosed is our donation check. We would like to make this donation to the Charlottesville-Albemarle Rescue Squad for 2007. We are aware of the wonderful services your provide the Charlottesville community.
As the leading Greek American organization for women, the Daughters of Peneolope encourages its members to participate in local community projects. We hope our donation can help the Charlottesville-Albemarle Rescue Squad achieve its goals.

I wanted to take this time to say thank you to the ones that responded Thursday night to Early Street. W. was like a second father to me. Words cannot express the thanks I have for everything you did, you each gave a part of yourself that night, and it will not be forgotten.

Wednesday Day Crew - Jeff Reynolds, Becky Gammon and Donna Walker
Please accept the enclosed contribution to your rescue squad. Last Wednesday our sister suffered a fall in a shopping male on highway 29, just north of Fashion Square Mall. Her mouth was cut and she needed emergency help. Your rescue squad responded immediately, took her to Martha Jefferson Hospital where she was treated, and we were able to come take her home that afternoon. The “team” on your ambulance were very reassuring. Please thank them for us.
We live in Richmond and it was a great relief to receive your prompt attention.

Thank you and your courteous driver for taking my husband, AW, to Martha Jefferson Emergency Room.
Thanks so much for the three wonderful people who got me up and to the hospital. I fell after a knee replacement and broke my other leg in two places. I am now recovering after a second operation.
Thanks for your wonderful service!
Dear Rescue Squad Members,
A belated but very sincere thank you to you guys for appearing (in 9 minutes no less!) when my husband had chest pains. Your prompt and efficient service was very much appreciated!!
Wednesday Day Crew - Donna Walker, Jeff Reynolds and Jason Inofuentes
Last Wednesday morning a large ambulance, a fire truck and I think a crew of about 7 men and women came to my daughter’s house and treated her for what turned out to be a massive bleeding stroke and transported her to UVA ER where she died the following morning.
My wife and I were impressed beyond words with the crew’s overall deportment at the house, their teamwork, loving care and competence in treating her. I have repeated this observation to many.
I am sorry to say that the draft obituary I gave to the funeral home failed to include my request “that memorial contributions should be sent to CARS”. I spoke with them today and they are going to run an amended obituary this week. Thank you again for your tremendous support to our community.
Monday Day Crew - Mariah Rogers and Becky Gammon
Please accept this contribution in loving memory of my wife KY who passed away on the 19th.
CARS provided prompt and professional care to her and transported her to Martha Jefferson Hospital. I greatly appreciate the efforts of all who came to her aid.
Enclosed is a donation to the Albemarle Rescue Squad for service you provided last month in answering my call to get my wife to the hospital. Your team was courteous and efficient and made a difficult time for us as easy as possible.
The enclosed check of $100.00 is in honor of Jennifer Butler, Emily Kim, Ryan Morgan and Ryan Kirk. I thank them for their wonderful care.
The diagnosis is Meniere's Disease, a disorder of the inner ear. I am still unsteady on my feet but hope to recover.
Best wishes, I salute you!
EM, R.N. Charlottesville
Two very nice young men responded to my 911 call about 3:15 am Wednesday to get my husband off the floor and back into bed. Thank you very much for providing this service!
Enclosed is a small donation

To All CARS Volunteers,
On Saturday, my son had friends over to celebrate his 17th birthday. Boys will be boys and unbeknownst to me, they were tossing jawbreakers in the air to catch in their mouths. The birthday boy got one caught in his throat, and we called 911.
Thankfully, all turned out ok – the squad came, and en-route to the hospital, the jawbreakers passed to my son's stomach.
I don’t know who the volunteer EMT’s were that night. I was so distressed, I never even got their names. However, I wanted to thank the young man and young woman who competently handled the situation, and put my son and I at ease. Please find enclosed a donation to CARS as a token of our thanks.
Nikki Kielar & Hunter Ware
Dear CARS Volunteers,
Thank you very much for Hunter Ware and Nikki Kielar saving my grandson's life on 7 November, 2004. N.S., now 25 years old, collapsed on the soccer field from an enlarged heart, and thanks to Nikki and Hunter he is doing pretty well. He is partially blind, but doing well with the help of the Virginia State Blind Association. He now lives in Staunton, VA.
God Bless you all!
Sincerely, Mrs. B. S.
P.S. I'm so sorry Nikki lost her life in a helicopter crash, but please thank Hunter for helping N. Enclosed are two checks for the CARS volunteers who help save people's lives.
Charlottesville-Albemarle Rescue Squad,
On behalf of the Technical Rescue Association, Henrico and Chesterfield Counties and The Rescue Challenge Committee, thank you for support of this years event. The heavy rescue and personnel that you provided this year were a tremendous help.
Please accept this donation as a token of our thanks for CARS support. I hope it will cover your fuel expenses for transporting your unit to and from Richmond each day. We could not have pulled off this event without CARS help and support.
Dear Laura Johnson and CARS Volunteers,
On behalf of the Virginia Discovery Museum, WVPT, Z95.1 Lite Rock and the UVA Children's Hospital, thank you for your participation in KidVention 2007! We estimate that about 800 people attended KidVention this year. From the smiles in children's faces and the positive comments from parents, I would say the event was a success.
Thank you for donating your time and expertise to exhibit at KidVention. The children all seemed to really enjoy the tours of the ambulance, the games, and trying on the gear! Hopefully, they learned something about emergency rescue while they were having fun.
Enclosed please find some pictures from the event and a few admit "one family free" passes to the Museum. I hope that all the CARS volunteers that participated in KidVention had a good time and can use the passes.
Please let me know if you would be interested in doing future programs with the Museum or if you have any suggestions about KidVention.
